The Democratic Party is considering a historic gamble by potentially selecting Vice President Kamala Harris as its presidential candidate. This move would challenge America’s longstanding issues of racism, sexism, and Harris’ political missteps to defeat Republican Donald Trump.
Throughout U.S. history, voters have elected only one Black president and no woman to the presidency, leading some to question if Harris can overcome these barriers. LaTosha Brown, co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, acknowledges that Harris’ race and gender will be significant factors.
Harris would face several challenges, including a limited timeframe to campaign and unite the party. Despite this, many Democrats are excited about her prospects. Some lawmakers worry about President Joe Biden’s ability to win and serve another term due to his age and health, increasing the appeal of a younger candidate like Harris.
Harris, who is 59, champions issues like abortion rights that resonate with younger voters. Supporters believe she can energize these voters, consolidate Black support, and effectively challenge Trump. However, her early years in office and short-lived 2020 presidential campaign have left some Democrats cautious.
Harris has faced and overcome significant scrutiny related to her race and gender. Her candidacy could potentially galvanize Black voters and women, particularly those who regret not supporting Hillary Clinton in 2016. With greater name recognition than other potential Democratic candidates, Harris’ flaws and strengths are well-known, providing a clearer campaign path.
However, Harris’ tenure as vice president has not been without issues, including staff turnover and limited progress on key portfolios. Critics argue that her record, rather than her race, may pose a greater risk.
Despite facing racist and sexist attacks from Trump, Harris’ strong stance on reproductive rights has bolstered her position within the party. Biden has credited her with helping to avert a Republican “red wave” in the 2022 midterms, and she remains a key campaign spokesperson.
While some Black women support Biden, Harris could inherit his strong backing among Black voters. Political strategist Donna Brazile and others have shown support for a Biden-Harris ticket, condemning party disunity. However, some voters feel disillusioned with the Democratic Party’s handling of Biden’s health, potentially impacting Harris’ support.
